Individuals with Intellectual or Developmental Disabilities-(IDD) may experience challenges in major life activities, such as mobility, learning, language, and independent living. The symptoms of these conditions can be noticed at any time until a person reaches 22 years old and often, the effects may last throughout a person’s lifetime.
How Can You Receive Services?
In the state of Texas, you must have one of the following to be able to receive services:
- A diagnosis of IDD
- A diagnosis of a pervasive developmental disability such as autism that fits the requirements of the latest Diagnostic and Statistical Manual.
- A related condition and be eligible for, and enroll in, and HHSC program that serves people with IDD.
- A nursing home resident with a diagnosis of IDD or a related condition.
- An eligibility for Early Childhood Intervention services.
For those who are eligible to receive these services, they can choose to receive their services in a group home with other individuals with IDD, their own homes, an intermediate care facility for individuals with an intellectual disability or a related condition (ICF/IDD) in your community, and a state-supported living center. The kinds of services that are offered in this program may include the following:
- Adaptive aids
- Behavior support
- Caregiver respite
- Community support
- Daytime programs
- Dental treatment
- Help getting and keeping a job
- Nursing services
- Specialized therapies
